Answers to common questions from painters who want better-looking results.

How do I stop numbers showing through light colors?

Apply two or three thin coats rather than one thick one, letting each dry fully. For stubborn areas, a thin layer of white underneath before the final color can help. More in our finishing guide.

How do I get clean edges between areas?

Use a fine brush, outline each area first and then fill the middle, and keep paint slightly fluid so it flows to the line. Rotating the canvas so you always paint towards yourself helps too.

Can I blend colors in a paint-by-number kit?

Yes. Softening the boundary between neighbouring areas while the paint is still wet gives smoother skies, water and skin tones. Try it on large areas first; see the techniques section on our home page.

What if I run out of a color?

Mix a replacement from the remaining paints, testing on scrap paper and letting the test dry before comparing, since acrylics usually dry slightly darker. Our color mixing guide explains how.

How do I keep kit brushes usable?

Rinse after every color, never let paint dry in the bristles, reshape the tip and store brushes flat or bristles-up. See brush care.

Should I varnish my finished painting?

Many painters do: once the paint is fully cured, a clear acrylic varnish evens out the sheen and protects the surface. Read finishing and sealing for options.

How do I choose a harder kit?
